Hard Drive Privileges

If a drive won't let you render, capture from tape, display thumbnail images and audio waveforms, it may be that your media drive has ownership "issues". This can be remedied by turning off ownership on the drive (in most cases). By the way, the most likely reason why a media drive may not have enough privileges is that more than one user has been created for the computer.

1. From the Finder (Desktop), select the media hard drive with problems.

2. Press Command/I to bring up the Get Info window for the drive.

3. For OS X version 10.5 (Leopard), at the bottom of the Get Info window is a line labeled "Sharing & Permissions". Twirl down the arrow across from this. Click the little lock button to unlock it (at which point you'll be prompted for your password). Next you'll be able to check the box labeled "Ignore ownership on this volume".<!--EndFragment-->
