Creating Final Cut Pro X Effects Using Apple Motion 5

Overview

Since its launch in 1999, Apple’s Final Cut Pro has had an advanced internal scripting system that allowed third parties and individuals to make custom effects and transitions to add missing features to the application.

Final Cut Pro X effects, transitions, generators and titles are created using Motion 5, Apple’s motion graphics application. Motion can save specialized ‘Motion Templates’ which Final Cut Pro X uses to modify video clips, animate transitions between clips and display advanced graphics and typography.

Apple Motion was launched in 2004. It is a real-time motion graphics and compositing tool. Unlike competing applications, it is designed to play back animated compositions in real time without having to wait for rendering. As well as combining layers of graphics and video in 2D, layers can be arranged in 3D space when combined with animated cameras and lights.

As Motion is aimed to support the needs of motion graphics designers, it has compositing options, animation controls and effects that aren’t available in Final Cut Pro X. These features are not commonly needed by editors during the editing process. The art of creating motion templates for use in Final Cut is to combine Motion’s abilities into a few simple controls to carry out specific tasks.

In this webinar we’ll show you how to use the advanced effects, animation and compositing features of Apple Motion 5 to create practical and exciting effects for use within Final Cut Pro X.

  • Modifying built-in Final Cut Pro X effects.
  • Working in Motion 5.
  • Making Motion 5 effects available in Final Cut Pro X.
  • Combining multiple complex effect parameters into a single control.
  • Distributing effects to other editors.
